The mission of the osteopathic residency is continued excellence in osteopathic training while providing a source for osteopathic primary care to the people of Southeastern North Carolina.

After the completion of residency, osteopathic Family Medicine residents will be board eligible for both American College of Osteopathic Family Medicine and American Academy of Family Medicine certifications on completion of the respective examinations.

Barbara E. Walker, D.O. is the Director of Osteopathic Medical Education. She is the Osteopathic Program Director for the Family Medicine residency. You can contact her with any questions regarding the osteopathic residency by phone at (910) 332-3607 or by email at Barbara.walker@seahec.net. Debbie Blackburn is the Resident Administrative Associate. She can be contacted by phone at (910) 332-3612 or email her at Debbie.blackburn@seahec.net.

The Family Medicine Residency Program was awarded one of the federal government’s Primary Care Residency Expansion Grants sponsored by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). This funding will allow New Hanover’s Family Medicine Residency Program to increase its numbers by two positions, creating a 6-6-6 program through 2016. This grant has increased the number of Osteopathic spots available from 2 to 3 beginning with the upcoming match.

The program participates in the DO Match and the applications are taken through ERAS. We offer three positions linked to the Family Medicine Residency, which is a dually approved program. We also offer three Traditional Rotating Internship positions, which are managed through the Internal Medicine residency and have osteopathic oversight by Dr. Walker.
